💙Udarata dance tradition

A person looking for the origin of Udarata dance should pay attention to the popular legends among the dancers who practice that dance. The reason for this is due to the relationship between the stories and dance elements of Udarata dance. There is a good relationship between the story about the life of the king of Paduvas Dev, which can be considered very important from these legends, and the upland dance.

The Shanti Karma which was held to alleviate the life defect of King Paduvas Dev is the Kohomba Kankari Shanti Karma, which is still performed by the upland dancer. Unlike other Shanti Karmas in this country, the Kohomba Kankari Shanti Karma is a Shanti Karma that gives a prominent place to dance and singing. And the various stories that happened later are related to the upland dance art.

The art of dance that started in this way developed day by day and became popular in the central mountainous areas of Sri Lanka under the name of upland dance tradition.

As areas where upland dance art is popular,

Satkoralaya, Satarakoralaya, Dumbara, Hewaheta, Kandy District, Kurunegala District, Kegalle District can be mentioned.

Kohomba Kankaria is the main form of upland dance, and the main costume (stage costume) is the mask. The gatta drum is the main instrument. Upland dance consisting of 12 foot drills and 12 floor drills is very beautiful and is coordinated with 18 and 4 wattams.
